Hamon is a supernatural ability that mimics the effects of sunlight, making it lethal to vampires and other creatures of darkness. In the Phantom Blood arc, Will A. Zeppeli teaches Jonathan Joestar to use Hamon to fight Dio Brando, who became a vampire using an ancient Stone Mask. In Their Own Story

In the Battle Tendency arc, set in 1939, Joseph Joestar teams up with Caesar Zeppeli to battle the Pillar Men. They are overwhelmed by Wamuu, who poisons Joseph by placing rings in his windpipe and aorta. Joseph and Caesar have one month to defeat Esidisi and Wamuu to obtain antidotes, while also preventing them from gaining the Red Stone of Aja. They train under Lisa Lisa, the Hamon coach, to control their Hamon. Joseph defeats Esidisi and Wamuu, but Kars obtains the Red Stone of Aja and becomes more powerful. Aided by German soldier Rudol von Stroheim, Joseph uses the Red Stone of Aja against Kars to defeat him. The power of Hamon is shown as a precise, disciplined force that requires immense stamina and focus, with a single mistake in rhythm breaking the flow.
